The Defense Medical Exam Toolkit (DME)

Purpose : This course provides an explanation on how legal nurses can help attorneys by attending defense medical examinations. The workshop will explore a list of recommended items to have available when the legal nurse is assigned to accompany a client to an examination. The course will cover the expectations of the legal nurse before, during, and after the DME. The legal nurse may work with a defense or plaintiff attorney. The course will discuss the recommended skills that qualify a legal nurse to attend a DME. Sample DME reports and case studies will be analyzed by the participants to provide practical experience with DMEs. The workshop will conclude with a discussion on the completion of the DME report and the billing process for the work performed.

  • Discuss the billing process for the legal nurse who attends a defense medical examination.

Outcome :At the completion of this course, participants will be able to define the components of a defense medical examination. Participants will be able to identify the key tools which will enhance the effectiveness of a complete DME. Participants will be able to define the role of the legal nurse who attends a DME with the client. Finally, the participants will be able to write a comprehensive report and discuss the billing process for the assignment.
